PADOUK

TIMBER

ABOUT PADOUK

Padouk, more rarely padauk or paduk, is the term used to market woods whose timber is used in the construction of furniture, parquet, interior joinery, veneers and musical instruments. When freshly cut its color is brighter, but over time it oxidizes to a darker, rich brown.

Padouk timber comes from a wide range of tree species of the genus Pterocarpus.

It has good workability and excellent finishing ability. The most used species grow in Africa and Asia.

The whitish sapwood differs clearly from the coral red heartwood which tends to darken over time. The texture is medium and the grain straight. The heartwood is durable and resists attack from insects and fungi.

APPLICATIONS

The wood is easy to work with and it is possible to obtain an excellent finish. Joints with nails and screws are easy . It is generally used in exterior joinery, stairs, floor boards and in cabinet making for furniture, furnishings, decorative veneers, for knife handles and various tools.
