The sapwood, pinkish or sometimes yellowish, is clearly distinguishable from the heartwood which is instead reddish brown and tends to darken with the passage of time.

The scent emanating from the tree after being sawn is very characteristic.

Sapelli has a fine texture and a wavy grain.

These features give it a rather decorative look.

The sapwood is subject to attacks by insects and fungi while the heartwood is resistant.
